simba - poet

Hosted by Simba

As a child, I remember listening to my parents’ and grandparents’ records, most of the time, while reading a book.  So, I believe it was a natural progression for me to get into Djing and Poetry.  Being a product of Philadelphia’s rich cultural history also influenced my greatly to include the art of music and words as integral parts of my life.

A dancer by trade during my childhood and finally ending during the early 1990’s because of tendonitis, I began to lean heavily on my writing as a vehicle to express the pain for being unable to dance anymore.

My gift for writing, which was born in the poetry readings at small coffee houses, bookstores and often, in peoples homes in Philly, was cultivated into a career once I migrated to Baltimore, Md. In 1999.

It was here, amid the menagerie of gritty, creative voices that Simba, the poet found his place.  Baltimore provided the perfect cocktail needed to set me on the path of my calling, which is one of many facets.  As a poet, educator, activist and dj, I have been blessed to be able to reach people on multiple platforms through multiple mediums that cross generations.  I am literally just playing out the soundtrack to my life.
